Rapid urbanization has transformed cities into major centres of population, economic activity, technological innovation, and social interaction. At the same time, accelerating urban growth has intensified challenges related to climate change, environmental degradation, congestion, housing shortages, inequality, resource consumption, waste management, and infrastructure vulnerability. Sustainable cities and smart urban development have therefore emerged as important approaches for creating urban environments that are economically productive, environmentally responsible, socially inclusive, and resilient to climate-related risks. This research paper examines the relationship between sustainable urban development and smart-city transformation, emphasizing the integration of digital technologies, climate resilience, resource efficiency, sustainable mobility, inclusive infrastructure, and participatory governance. The paper explores the role of artificial intelligence, Internet of Things technologies, geographic information systems, remote sensing, big-data analytics, digital twins, smart grids, intelligent transportation systems, and digital public services in improving urban management. It also examines climate-resilient infrastructure, nature-based solutions, renewable energy, circular economy principles, water management, waste reduction, and sustainable housing. Particular attention is given to the social dimension of smart cities, including affordable housing, accessibility, digital inclusion, gender-sensitive planning, employment, and participation of marginalized communities. The analysis demonstrates that technology can improve urban efficiency and decision-making, but technological innovation alone cannot guarantee sustainability. Smart urban development must be guided by public-interest objectives, transparent governance, privacy protection, equitable access, and long-term environmental planning. The paper argues that the future sustainable city should be understood not merely as a technologically advanced city but as an adaptive, inclusive, resource-efficient, and climate-resilient urban system. Integrating digital innovation with participatory governance, green infrastructure, sustainable mobility, renewable energy, and inclusive economic development can create cities capable of addressing contemporary urban challenges while improving quality of life for present and future generations.
